Diane Holloway, blogger for “On the Record” (published on the Travis County Democrats Website), will be the featured speaker for the Lake Travis Democrats meeting on Tuesday, October 11. The Honorable Rosemary Lehmberg, Travis County District Attorney, will also speak at the meeting. Rosemary recently announced her intention to run for re-election to a second term.

Steve Harvey, President of the Lake Travis Education Foundation, will close the meeting with an informative talk about the upcoming School Bond Election on November 8th.

The Democrats' October meeting will be held Tuesday, October 11th at the Lakeway Activity Center, located at 105 Cross Creek in Lakeway. The meeting will begin at 6:30 pm with wine, non-alcoholic beverages, and appetizers served as part of a social time. The business and presentation part of the meeting will begin promptly at 7 pm.

After a long career as TV critic and feature reporter for the Austin American-Statesman, Diane Holloway joined the Travis County Democratic’s Party’s web communication efforts as reporter/writer of ‘ On The Record with Diane Holloway,’ the Travis County Democratic Party’s Blog published on their website. For the Blog, Diane interviews elected officials, candidates and regular people about the issues that affect our lives. Diane had the good fortune of working as a student vote coordinator for Sen. Robert Kennedy’s presidential campaign. After graduating from college in Virginia, she lived in Washington, D.C., working for the Library of Congress, the American Film Institute and the National Endowment for the Arts. Diane moved to Austin to work for the daily newspaper as a reporter, columnist, critic and blogger. She is married to a Ben Sargent, a Pulitzer Prize Winning Cartoonist.

Rosemary Lehmberg, also a speaker at the October meeting, is a native of Taylor, Texas. She received a BA degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin and her Juris Doctor degree from St. Mary’s University School of Law.

She maintained a private law practice before joining the staff of the Travis County District Attorney in 1976. Rosemary began her career with the District Attorney working with the Grand Jury and then as a trial attorney in the 167th District Court, presided over by Judge Tom Blackwell. She later became chief of that court and then the chief of the Trial Division. Rosemary has served as the chief of the Career Criminal, Major Crimes and Public Integrity Divisions of the Travis County District Attorney.

In 1988, Rosemary became director of the Family Justice Division. While director, she was a founder of the Travis County Children's Advocacy Center, now the Center for Child Protection, which opened its new campus in September, 2008. The Center provides state-of-the-art, collaborative investigations of child abuse cases in a child-friendly environment. During her tenure with the Family Justice Division, the Austin Chronicle named Rosemary the Best Lawyer for Children's Issues.

Rosemary then served as First Assistant District Attorney from 1997 until 2009, when she was elected District Attorney. She took office in January, 2009, the first woman District Attorney in Travis County history. In July 2011, Rosemary announced her intention to run for re-election to a second term.

Following Diane’s and Rosemary’s presentations at the meeting, Steve Harvey, the Lake Travis Education Foundation President, will give a talk to help provide voters with information about the November bond election. In May, a 27-member citizens’ advisory committee comprised of men and women representing each elementary and secondary school attendance zone recommended to the LTISD Board of Trustees that a $158.5 million bond package be brought before District voters. Two weeks later, in a unanimous 7-0 vote, the Board approved an order calling a bond election to be held November 8, 2011. Residents who have received an Over-65 Exemption or ‘freeze’ from the Travis County Appraisal District will incur no tax impact as a result of the approved bond election.

PRESS RELEASE
LAKE TRAVIS DEMOCRATS

February 2011
Becky Moeller, the newly elected president of the Texas AFL-CIO, will speak to the Lake Travis Democrats on Tuesday, February 8.  Moeller, 58, is the first woman to hold statewide elected office in the Texas AFL-CIO, having broken that barrier in 2003 when she became secretary-treasurer.

The Democrats' meeting will be held at the Lakeway Activity Center, located at 105 Cross Creek in Lakeway. The meeting will begin at 6:30 pm with wine, non-alcoholic beverages, and appetizers served as part of a social time. The business and presentation part of the meeting will begin promptly at 7 pm.
Prior to being elected Texas AFL-CIO President, Becky Moeller served as the organization's secretary-treasurer.  During her four-year term in that office, Moeller brought efficiencies and oversight to the state federation budget that kept programs going even after the departure of a substantial chunk of membership from the AFL-CIO umbrella. She also worked with past AFL-CIO President, Emmett Sheppard, to build new revenue sources.

In addition, Moeller and Sheppard introduced a new political education program that enabled organized labor in Texas to contact union members in get-out-the-vote campaigns more effectively. The program helped produce substantial gains for labor-backed candidates in the Legislature and Congress.

Before coming to the Texas AFL-CIO, Becky Moeller was president of the Communications Workers of America Local 6137, the Corpus Christi local representing workers at SBC (now AT&T).     Among her public service activities, she also served, under an appointment by Gov. Ann Richards, as Chair of the commission that oversees the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Moeller is the mother of Kristie Moeller Veit and stepmother of Misty Moeller. She has five granddaughters.
