The April meeting of the Lake Travis Democrats features W. Gardner Selby discussing  the Austin American-Stateman  website which he edits, PolitiFact Texas.  Following the speaker, a short candidate forum will be presented allowing the local MUD and LTISD candidates to briefly introduce themselves to the community and highlight their views.

W. Gardner Selby, the chief political writer at the Austin American-Statesman, takes the task of political reporting on candidates very seriously, believing no question is off limitsIn an era where the newspaper is often lagging behind the lead stories, Selby has facilitated the Austin American-Stateman being an internet presence through PolitiFact Texas.   PoltitiFact Texas is a partnership with the St. Petersburg Times Pulitzer Prize winning web site PolitiFact.com to "find the truth in politics."  The web sites establish a six point scale for measuring political statements from "True" to 'The statement is not accurate and makes a ridiculous claim."  PolitiFact Texas editors and writer always attempt to find the original quote in its full context from a politician or political critic before putting the statement up for scrutiny.   Deliberation on the truth includes researching original sources, government documents, and consulting impartial experts.

Also, all the local candidates for the MUD and LTISD are invited and with confirmations from MUD candidates Jerry Hietpas and Fred Newton and LTISD Place 3 candidates Alex Alexander and Hamil Cooper.

We would sure love to have you join us on Tuesday, April 13th, at the Lakeway Activity Center.  Social at 6:30, Guest Speaker at 7:15. .

Lake Travis Democrats Meeting

March 9, 2010

The Democrats' Primary is done.  Most of the decisions are made, only a couple runoffs on the horizon.  Come hear two imposing speakers and help the 2010 officers of Lake Travis Democrats celebrate their inauguration.  The meeting is Tuesday, March 9th starting at 6:30PM with refreshments and speakers at 7:00PM, at the Lakeway  Activity Center.

Our featured speaker is the incumbant candidate of  Texas House District 47 , Representative Valinda Bolton.  While Bolton was unapposed in the democrat primary, she will face an intense race against her opponent this November.  This is a year when the other side wants to win big and deliver a message about being a conservative. Valinda is a solid candidate with a strong record of accomplishments and a perspective on the members of her district that proves she knows what priorities the voters set.

Matt Glazer, Editor-in-chief of the Burnt Orange Report (BOR) will discuss "What's Next" in Texas politics. Glazer is an award-winning speaker on effective use of new media in candidate and grassroots campaigns. His field work in Texas includes Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance, Equality Texas, the political campaigns of Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell, Texas Democratic Party Chair Boyd Richie and State Rep. Pete GallegoCurrently, he is a partner at GNI Strategies, an Austin firm twining progressive causes and social media.

Januaray 2010

Mark Strama, Texas House Representative, District 50 will be the keynote speaker at the January 2010 meeting.  Strama is representing the Bill White for Governor campaign.  The meeting will be held at the Lakeway Activity Center.

Supporters describe Mark Strama:

Austin American-Statesman, 2008

Democratic incumbent Mark Strama, 41, is a candidate who has shown a remarkable ability to bring together diverse interests in the Texas House to get things done. There is simply no good reason to replace Strama, who has been a workhorse for his district and all Texans. ... To make government more transparent, Strama, a technology entrepreneur, authored legislation to create one-stop-shopping on the Internet to provide the public an accounting of government spending. ... Strama, who was elected to the House in 2004, has compiled an impressive record of accomplishments, passing complex legislation as well as bills aimed at making government more efficient.

Austin Chronicle, 2008

During the revolt against Speaker Craddick last session, Strama could have shrunk into the background like some other members of his caucus pegged as Craddick Ds. Instead, he delivered a clear legal argument that dismantled Craddick's claims that he who wields the gavel wields absolute authority. His package of proposals to create an independent redistricting committee, to expand campaign finance reform, and to improve ballot access could make him a major factor in political battles before the 2010 redistricting. In addition, his authoring of effective green legislation and creating funding that bridges the gap for veterans going to college are solid policy.
